About Solitude Ranch
Led by Melanie Martinelli, with over 30 years of equine experience, the Solitude Ranch team is committed to the safe, and successful operation of a full service thoroughbred facility. The services offered cater to the Texas horse racing industry; with the determination to have Texas bred horses competing at the highest level.
Brian McClay is a partner in the racing and breeding operations of the Solitude Ranch. His involvement culminates a 50-year passion for thoroughbred racing and breeding. His achievements include the breeding of Canadian Champion Summer Sunday and his stakes winning half-sister Milwaukee Brew. Both these horses are progeny of the Canadian Hall of Fame and Canadian Champion, Dancing Allstar which also raced under the McClay family stable; Trinity West Stables and now resides at the Solitude Ranch. With ownership or co-ownership in 30 mares and stallions including King Zachary and Tiz Mischief, Brian hopes to deliver world class racehorses to not only the Texas horse racing community, but the world.
The common themes that run through all of Solitude Ranches facilities are luxury, safety and results. Current facilities include stallion stalls, indoor foaling pens with climate control and 24 hour cameras, veterinary stocks, and an array of options that allow for controlled and successful breeding procedures. Once ready, our mare and foal pastures, yearling pastures, and open mare pastures offer comfortably healthy spaces for the development of happy, healthy champions- year after year!
Construction of our new 21,500 square foot show barn is underway. It will boast 6 luxuriously appointed and oversized stallion stalls; 50 oversized foaling stalls; a state-of-the-art repro center, and more.
While we are going the extra mile for our horses, owners and guests are not being left out. Solitude Ranch offers posh hospitality and elite recreation. Solitude Sporting Club is co-located on the ranch and offers private club options that include clay shooting, lodging, and more.
When asked why Gene has spent most of his life in the horse industry-he lights up. As he says, “ I got the bug when I was 12.” It all started with his grandfather, who trained horses in Middleburg, VA. His four- year Army enlistment just out of high school united discipline with his love of horses and a career was formed. From working in the reined cow horse industry with famed trainer Billy Martin to apprenticing with thoroughbred legends, the Taylor’s; Gene’s passion for the care of race horses and his desire to be a welcoming ambassador for the sport make him the perfect Breeding Manager for Solitude Thoroughbreds.
Resume’ highlights include the Derry Meeting Farm, the Maryland Stallion Station, and Riegle Heirs Farms. He is proud to have been on the team for some of the greats- Unbridled Song, Cat Thief, Real Quiet, and many more. His background also includes owning and operating a private blood stock agency; specializing in nicking and consulting on purchases.
Gene’s mission at Solitude Thoroughbreds is clear; to be an ambassador for the industry he loves by taking uncompromising care “his horses” and instilling not only passion, but honesty and integrity in every aspect of horse racing.
